Chicago, IL (January 23, 2012) – ATHENA International presented the 2012 Global ATHENA Leadership Award, to Mary Schnack of Mary Schnack & Associates on January 19, 2012 at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago.  The Global ATHENA Leadership Award is presented annually to an exceptional woman leader who demonstrates professional excellence, gives back to her community, assists other women in realizing their full leadership potential and who has had an international impact on the lives of women.

ATHENA International supports, honors and develops women leaders, and inspires women to reach their full potential. Schnack now joins a list of ATHENA honorees that includes Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords; Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; Nina Totenberg, legal affairs correspondent for National Public Radio; and Dr. Sally Ride, a former NASA astronaut.

A specialist in communications for almost 30 years, Schnack is an award-winning writer, reporter, public relations professional and advocate.

In addition to her international work on crisis and communications training, Schnack started Up From The Dust, an organization supporting the global growth of women microenterprises. She exhibits at various women’s conferences throughout the country, selling items made by women microenterprises in developing countries, including China, Afghanistan, Egypt, Guatemala, Kenya, South Africa and Ghana.  The business also includes website and home party sales, to help the women secure U.S. retail outlets for the sales of their items.

“There is no question that Mary Schnack deserves this award.  She has such a positive impact on women all over the world through her work in multiple women’s organizations and through Up From The Dust,” said ATHENA International Founder Martha Mayhood Mertz.  “Mary is a deeply valued member of our ATHENA International Board of Directors.”
