Dr. Mulu Muleta Receives 2010 Global ATHENA Leadership Award Senior Medical Advisor to Women & Health Alliance International Sets Standards of Maternal & Reproductive Care in Disadvantaged Communities World-Wide CHICAGO, IL – April 16, 2010 –ATHENA International awarded Dr. Mulu Muleta, Senior Medical Advisor to Women and Health Alliance International, Ethiopia, the 2010 Global ATHENA Leadership Award at the 16th annual ATHENA Women’s Leadership Summit on April 5 in Chicago.
“It is such an honor to recognize Dr. Muleta as the 2010 Global ATHENA Leadership Award recipient,” stated Dianne Dinkel, President & CEO of ATHENA International. “We were inspired by her story and the stories of the thousands of fistula patients that she has helped.”
Dr Muleta is the Senior Medical Advisor to Women and Health Alliance International, a not-for profit organization with the over-arching goal of addressing maternal care and women’s post-partum reproductive health in disadvantaged communities and low income settings throughout the world. Muleta has been instrumental in developing the Alliance’s maternal and neonatal health projects in different settings in Ethiopia, including the Gondar Region.
Each year at the Summit, ATHENA, an organization known internationally for supporting, honoring and developing women leaders, presents the Global ATHENA Leadership Award to a woman who demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in her profession, provides valuable service to improve the quality of life for others in their community, actively assists women in achieving their full leadership potential and whose body of work has national or international significance.
“Dr. Muleta embodies, in every way, the characteristics of leadership espoused by ATHENA International,” added Dinkel.
Prior to joining Women and Health Alliance International, Dr. Muleta worked with various national and international institutions, including the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, and most recently the United Nations Population Fund.
Dr. Muleta trained as an Obstetric Surgeon in Ethiopia, and has spent the last 18 years treating women with fistula in Africa. She earned a Masters degree in Public Health at the Institute of Antwerp in Belgium and holds a PhD from Bergen in Norway. She has published several articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, including the Lancet, the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the East African Medical Journal and the Ethiopian Medical Journal, and her career has also been profiled in the Lancet. In 2009, Dr. Muleta was recognized by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) for her lifetime of service.
